I work in oils, acrylics and pastels exploring my emotional response to the natural world, largely Sussex and Cornwall where, as a Londoner, I find the freedom of space liberating and exhilarating. I never know how a particular landscape will affect me — a quiet meditation or an energetic  joy — but I try to hang on to the immediacy of my response and reproduce it back in the studio, working from sketches, photos, impressions and memories until the paint takes over. In this way the original image becomes simply a cornerstone as layers are constructed on top of it, and I am more likely to discover a spontaneous line or mark or colour that brings the painting alive in the same way that small details, a fleeting pattern or shadow, can make a familiar valley or beach endlessly exciting.

In 2005 I set up a national charity which supports people with a rare endocrine condition called Hypoparathyroidism, to which a percentage of my sales is always donated: www.hpth.org.uk
